Pet Safety on New Year's Eve

New Year’s Eve is typically filled with festive celebrations and lots of loud and colorful fireworks. That might be fun for humans, but it can scare many pets.

Here are a few tips which will help to keep your furry friends safe this New Year’s Eve:

  • Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with updated contact information
  • Be aware that firework can be set off before dark. Keep your dog on a leash when toileting
  • Keep your pets indoors in a quiet area that is familiar to them. Provide plenty of fresh water and offer safe chew toys to your dog. Dogs who are crate trained may feel safest in their kennels.
  • Try to darken the room and/or crate. Play soothing music at a level that helps drown out the firework noise.
  • Always check with your veterinarian before using any drugs or tranquilizers, and don't forget to watch out for guests opening doors, which can provide an opportunity for animals to bolt outdoors.
  • Comforting your pet is different from cuddling, petting and holding, because that can actually reinforce the fear and panic. Instead reassure your pet, which is best done by your tone of voice and by remaining calm.
  • Many pets can be drawn to glasses of beer or liquor that have been left behind after the celebration is over. Consumption of alcohol can be highly dangerous for animals, therefore clean the area thoroughly before you allow your pets to enter.
